If you want the ultimate in Threaded
Hole Location Gage, get the Variable Threaded Hole Location
Gage. This is made by only one gage maker and is really a fairly
complicated device. The threaded end of the Variable Threaded Hole
Location Gage has two sets of balls, one set at each end of the
thread. The Variable Threaded Hole Location Gage is screwed into
the product thread, then the balls expand into the pitch diameter
of the thread. The balls are the Best-Wire-Size diameter and seat
in the internal thread pitch diameter cylinder. By being located
at both end of the thread, they give a true picture of the position
of the thread.
The Variable Threaded Hole Location Gage is many times more expensive
and not without its other possible faults. First, being a manufactured
mechanical device it has many moving parts and there are potential
tolerance build-up problems within the Variable Threaded Hole Location
Gage. Second the Variable Threaded Hole Location Gage may have to
be built to order for your standard thread size because it is not
an on-the-shelf item. Third, to calibrate this tool you will need
a master threaded ring gage which is not inexpensive either.
